IUML is organized through a scientific and strategic project aiming at better positioning researchers and labs working locally in marine sciences  on the national and European arenas (H2020, INTERREG, ANR, PNEC, ENCORA, FRFC, LITEAU, ACI, etc.). By its critical size, IUML is one of the top marine research and training clusters in France.  One of the key features of this cluster lies in the spetrum of topics covered by the research units and the number of its collaborative projects between various disciplines: History, Biology, law, Food engineering, Economics, Biotechnology, Geography, Civil engineering, Management, Flux mechanics, Earth sciences, Sociology, Pharmaceutics, Ecotoxicology, Energy, Fisheries sciences, etc.

Collaborations may rely on several common facilities, of which the Oceanic basin of Ecole Centrale de Nantes allowing for tests of wave energy systems, the regional innovative platform of Bouin on shellfish cultures, the micro-algae challenge in Saint-Nazaire dedicated to 3rd generation biofuels, a sea fungi collection of more than 800 species, etc.
