Structure marine education and research in Nantes / Saint-Nazaire

Since its creation in 2004 and under different programs, IUML has always had the ambition to structure the sea-related research and higher education capacity within the Nantes / Saint-Nazaire region. Nowadays, it pools around 450 chercheurs working in different institutions (Universities of Nantes, Angers, Le Mans, Ecole Centrale de Nantes, Ifremer)  and develops close relationships with other entities (Ecole Nationale Supérieure Maritime, Ecole Nationale de Sécurité et d’Administration de la Mer, OSUNA, Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique, SMIDAP, Atlanpole, Isemar, etc.). Within the Pays de la Loire region, IUML can also cooperate with renowned maritime companies : Port Atlantique de Nantes Saint-Nazaire, STX shipyards, Bénéteau group, DCNS,…

On a broader scale, IUML is member of GIS Europôle Mer (cluster of marine and coastal sciences in Brittany and Pays de la Loire), réseau français des Universités Maritimes and of the European Marine Board.

In order to foster cooperation between Social and human sciences, Life and earth sciences and engineer sciences, IUML grants one or several inter-disciplinary PhD fellowships every year. The researchers of IUML also coordinate or participate to 15 Master programs, which represents another important feature of research and higher education in the Pays de la Loire region.
